Camping and Canoeing Fun

PE 40 Outdoor Ed Camping Trip

On May 28 & 29, Grade 11 and 12 students from Minnedosa Collegiate and Erickson Collegiate traveled to LA for an overnight camp trip. (LA = Lake Audy). A total of 31 students and four staff/supervisors made the trip. The group arrived at Lake Audy around 11 and by noon tents were set up and lunches were eaten. The next few hours were spent in canoes on the lake until the northwest wind and the waves that came with it convinced everyone to get off the lake. A few pike were caught and there were no tip-overs. Suppers were prepared and eaten around 5 PM and by 8, the wind and waves had calmed down again and the entire group went out for a short paddle. At 9 PM everyone hopped on the bus and went for a “wildlife cruise”. We got to park among a group of bison that included some calves that were only a few days old. We also spotted one black bear along the road. The rest of the evening was spent playing games and sitting around various campfires.

Wednesday morning was cool at sunrise – almost 0oC. Six hours later, the temperature would be almost 30oC! There was no wind all morning which made for excellent canoeing conditions once breakfasts were eaten. Lunch was at noon and following that, gear was packed and canoes were loaded on to the trailers. At 1:30, the bus pulled out, followed by the two trailers of canoes. Thanks to Cindy Heino for taking a couple days off work to come on the trip as the female chaperone.
